Kitchen Facelift vs. Full Renovation: What Cabinets Actually Cost in Toronto

Your kitchen needs a full renovation if you're changing the layout, plumbing, or electrical, and that runs $25,000 to $65,000 in Toronto. If your boxes are solid and you just want new doors, counters, and hardware, a facelift usually comes in under the bottom of that range, sometimes well under.

What a facelift actually is

A facelift keeps your existing cabinet boxes. We swap the doors and drawer fronts, add new hinges and pulls, and often install a new countertop, backsplash, and sink. Sometimes we paint the boxes to match the new doors. Most facelifts take one to two weeks of work with minimal demolition.

It works when three things are true:

• The cabinet boxes are in decent shape. No swollen MDF, no sagging shelves, no water damage under the sink.
• The layout works for you. You're not moving the sink, the stove, or the fridge.
• You can live with the footprint. No island addition, no removing a wall.

If any of those fail, a facelift is money spent on a kitchen you still won't like. That's the honest tradeoff.

What a full renovation gets you

A full reno means new boxes, new layout if you want one, updated electrical and plumbing, new flooring, lighting, and ventilation. In Toronto that typically lands between $25,000 and $65,000 depending on cabinet grade, appliance package, and how much structural work is hiding behind the walls.

The range is wide because kitchens hide problems. We open one wall and find knob-and-tube wiring. We pull an old floor and find rotted subfloor around the dishwasher line. A facelift doesn't touch any of that. A full reno fixes it while everything's already torn apart.

The cabinet question specifically

Cabinets are the biggest single line item in a kitchen budget, usually a third or more of the total. On a $25,000 job, that's roughly $8,000 to $10,000 in cabinets. On a $65,000 job, you're looking at $20,000 or more depending on whether you go stock, semi-custom, or custom.

That's why the facelift math is tempting. New doors and drawer fronts cost a fraction of full cabinets because you're reusing the most expensive structural part, the boxes. The catch: facelift doors only fit the boxes you have. If your boxes are a weird size or a discontinued line, matching doors may not exist. We've turned down facelifts for exactly that reason and told the homeowner straight that a reno was the better spend.

When we tell people to just do the full reno

• The kitchen is more than 20 years old and the boxes are particleboard starting to soften.
• You hate the layout, not just the look.
• You're planning to sell within five years and the kitchen is the reason buyers lowball.
• There's a known issue: slow drain, tripping breaker, cold floor. A facelift buries that problem behind new doors.

When the facelift is the right call

• The kitchen is 10 to 15 years old, solid construction, dated finish.
• You're staying in the home and the layout genuinely works for how you cook.
• You want to spread costs out: doors and counters now, full reno in five years.

Fall is a good window either way

Kitchen work doesn't depend on weather, but fall bookings fill up fast once people are back from summer and staring at their kitchens before the holidays. If you want a kitchen done before family arrives in December, the decision needs to happen soon. A facelift fits a short window. A full reno needs more runway, especially with permit and inspection timelines in Toronto.
