“Get the layout right before you fall in love with a countertop. Nobody ever said 'great quartz' about a kitchen where the fridge blocks the stove.”

The homeowner’s guide

The work triangle still wins

Sink, stove, fridge: the three points you bounce between a hundred times a day. Keep the total walking path under about 26 feet with no leg through a traffic lane, and the kitchen works no matter what it cost. Islands are great until they break the triangle; galley kitchens are unfashionable and ergonomically excellent. We design the movement first, then hang the pretty on it.

Cabinets: where the budget lives

Cabinetry is usually 30–40% of a kitchen. Stock cabinets (fixed sizes, quick ship) fit most rooms with filler panels and save real money. Semi-custom adds sizes and finishes; full custom builds to the millimetre and costs like it. The honest question is whether your room's quirks need custom or whether stock plus a good installer gets 95% there. Boxes matter more than doors: plywood boxes outlive particleboard, especially near the sink.

Counters, compared by someone who installs them

Quartz (engineered stone) is the GTA default for a reason: non-porous, consistent, no sealing. Granite is natural, unique, and wants sealing once a year. Butcher block is warm and affordable and shows its life. Porcelain slabs shrug off heat and UV but chip repair is tricky. Laminate has gotten legitimately good and is half the price of everything above. There's no wrong answer, just wrong expectations.

Living through a kitchen reno

Four to eight weeks once materials are on site, and the crew works indoors, which is why winter kitchens finish fastest and price best. Survival plan: set up a temporary kitchen (microwave, kettle, fridge) in another room, plastic-wall the work zone for dust, and agree on daily working hours up front. The families that plan the temporary kitchen rate the whole experience a full grade better. Ask us; we've watched it hundreds of times.

Things people get told (that aren’t quite true)

“Open concept is always better”

Taking down a wall can mean a beam, an engineer, and permits, and some families rediscover they liked a kitchen with a door. Open it up because you want it, not because listings say so.

“Custom cabinets are the quality option”

Custom is a fit option. Plenty of stock and semi-custom lines are built better than mediocre custom shops. Judge the box construction and hinges, not the word custom.

“Kitchen renos take three months minimum”

With materials on site before demo and a dedicated crew, 4–8 weeks is honest for most GTA kitchens. The three-month horror stories almost always start with a demo done before the cabinets were even ordered.

What kind of kitchen project is this?

1. The layout today…
2. Cabinet boxes (open a door, look inside)…
3. Appliance situation?

Questions we hear every week

What does a kitchen renovation cost in Toronto in 2026?

Full renovations typically run $25,000–$65,000. Cabinet grade and layout changes drive most of the spread.

How long does a kitchen take?

Four to eight weeks once materials are on site. Winter installs often finish fastest — the crew works indoors, uninterrupted.

What’s the work triangle?

Sink, stove and fridge should total under 26 feet of walking path. Getting the layout right matters more than any finish.

Can I keep my layout and still get a new kitchen?

Yes — keeping plumbing and gas in place is the single biggest money saver.
